SPRINGFIELD — Lincoln Land Community College honors African-American History Month during February with, “African Americans and Labor: The Impact.” Various events planned throughout the month will highlight the African-American influence on American labor and how free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, and vocational and voluntary all intersect with the collective experiences of African-American people.
The following events are free and open to the public and will be held in A. Lincoln Commons at ͷapp’s Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. The ͷapp African-American History Month Committee and ͷapp Student Life are event co-sponsors.
Monday Feb. 3 – African-American History Month kickoff, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join the Black Student Union for Black History Bingo, hot chocolate and treats.
Tuesday, Feb. 11 – “Keynote: Spotlight on Agriculture,” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Yves Doumen, founder of Motherland Community Garden, will share the impact African-American farmers have made locally and beyond.
Thursday, Feb. 20 – "Miles of Smiles, Years of Struggle" film documentary, 4-6 p.m. View a documentary about the Pullman car porters in recognition of the 100th anniversary. Popcorn, soda and snacks provided.
Wednesday Feb. 26 – African-American Food and Vendor Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event features free samples of African-American food, displays on the wares of African-American entrepreneurs and music.
