Simply stated, artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. AI is increasingly in the news, and its applications are everywhere 鈥 health care, advertising, smart homes and customized virtual assistants, to name a few. Particularly relevant to seniors is 鈥淗ow does AI affect me now and in the future 鈥 both good and bad?鈥
Lincoln Land Community College鈥檚 Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) aims to shed light on this topic through 鈥淎rtificial Intelligence and You,鈥 a four-part series.
This ALL Science series will focus on the breadth of AI applications across the spectrums of health, business, education, politics and the arts. Each session will include presentations of interest to seniors from a variety of knowledgeable speakers. Audience questions will be allowed as time permits.
The series, organized by the ALL Science Committee, is being offered in person and via Zoom on the following Wednesdays, 3-4:30 p.m. on the 汤头条app鈥檚 main campus in Springfield: Jan. 22 (Overview of AI), Feb. 5 (AI in Education and Business), Feb. 19 (AI in Politics and Health Care) and March 5 (AI in the Arts and Series Wrap-up).
The series is free and open to the public. Among the expected speakers are Kent Redfield and Ray Schroeder, emeritus professors at the University of Illinois Springfield; Lance Millburg, Memorial Health vice president and chief quality officer; and Jen Santarelli, Springfield artist.
Anyone interested in learning more about AI is encouraged to register. Seating is limited. ALL members can register online or by calling 217-786-2292. We also welcome the public to participate (but you may want to sign up for a half-year ALL membership; it鈥檚 only $35 a person!). Adults 50 and greater are invited to join ALL, a group of individuals devoted to the lifelong pursuit of learning. With 10 to 12 opportunities available each month, ALL provides enjoyable experiences in learning with a variety of opportunities to develop new friendships.
Continuing education units (CEUs) may be available for the 鈥淎rtificial Intelligence and You鈥 series for nurses (all levels), occupational therapists and assistants, nursing home administrators and K-12 teachers. While the sessions are free to attend, CEUs are $15 per session and must be requested separately after each session. For more information on availability, please email continuing.education@llcc.edu.
